So you have the skills… You can design, code and freelance till the cows come home. But are you maximizing your sales potential? Envato Studio delivers hundreds of thousands of visitors to the site every month – but it’s up to you to take advantage of that traffic and convert visitors to your services into paying clients. Here are 6 steps to help you make your services and profile attractive to buyers.
1) Choosing the Right Service Title
Crafting the right service title which is descriptive and attention-grabbing (without being hyperbolic) can be tricky. Especially if you’re trying to differentiate yourself against the competition. It’s best to be very clear about what you’re offering while describing a unique trait of the service. If you offer a quick turn around time on a logo design service, like Zlaws does, you could describe your service as ‘Express Logo Design’. Likewise, if you specialize in a certain style of design or approach to work, why not describe that? If all of your logos have a vintage feel, you could describe your service as ‘Retro Logo Design’. Another option is to focus on your special inclusions. If you offer a couple of initial concepts for a design service – then yell it from the rooftops! A service title like ‘Logo Design with Three Initial Concepts’ is likely to appeal to people who want some extra choice. Try tweaking your service title and see how it affects your sales and enquiries.
2) Amazing Service Examples are Key!
Pat from the Envato Studio review team stresses that great service examples on your listing (images and videos) are key to making sales. “Great images are important, even if your service isn’t necessarily design-related. Great images will attract the eye of buyers, making your service stand out in a page of search results. Even if you’re not a great designer, spend some time giving your images some love.”
Your service images are the main thing people look at when they’re browsing through services or search on the site, so they’re one of the most important parts of your listing. Great examples can be the difference between a sale and the client looking elsewhere. Even if design isn’t your forte, there are options. Why not consider hiring a fellow Studio provider to design some great images for you? If you’re offering a coding service, it can be difficult to figure out how to show off your service visually (although representative, screenshots of your text editor aren’t that exciting and don’t mean much to a buyer). Don’t waste the opportunity, think outside of the box about how you can describe your service – why not record a short screencast where you introduce yourself and your skills and describe what your service includes and why the client will love working with you? We can’t stress enough how important great examples are key to generating sales on Envato Studio – so take your time to get them right!
3) A Clear, Succinct Description – With Personality
Now that the client has seen your awesome service title and examples while browsing the site or searching, they’ve clicked on your service! This is your chance to get them over the line and convince them to buy – don’t waste the opportunity! It’s really important to be clear about what you offer as a part of the service. Pat explains: “A service which is too vague will likely be rejected. Since every service has a set price, the service description should give potential buyers a clear idea of what is included in that price, and what isn’t included. If you still want to leave things open to negotiation, you can encourage buyers to send you an enquiry to work out a custom price that suits their project.”
But it’s not all business! It’s important to give a potential client an idea of who you are and your personality. It’s important that the client feels they will enjoy working with you. Pat says: “It’s always great to see a service description that really shows the service provider’s personality. Of course you need to be informative and detailed about your service, but that doesn’t mean that you need to be boring. Showing that you’re a real human being can be very attractive. Maybe you could even record a video intro for your service!”
Easy to Follow Template for a Great Description:
- A short sentence about you and why you’re great at what you do. This is the perfect time to talk about your experience and let your personality shine through.
- A paragraph explaining exactly what the client will get with your service. What will be the final outcome? What will the process be like? Is this a premium fully-inclusive service, or one where you take a more streamlined, no-frills approach? Be upfront, and most importantly – clear. There is no need to include briefing guidelines here, as there is a specific section for that.
- Thank the client for considering your service and that you welcome the chance to work with them! If you’ve already had some positive reviews consider including some here as testimonials.
Finally, it is crucial your description be free of errors. Spelling mistakes or grammar errors make a really bad impression. If you haven’t even spent the time to proofread, how can the client be confident you will be thorough and careful with their job? If English is your second language, consider asking a friend for help (even our support team will be happy to give you a few pointers!).
4) Easy to Follow Briefing Guidelines (Nothing Vague!)
Your time is important, and so is your clients. You can save a lot of initial back and forth by giving really clear briefing guidelines. Make them easy to read, and avoid being vague. Specificity is key. A bulleted list of what you’ll need to supply the service is a good way to list your requirements. Don’t forget that your briefing requirements are displayed on your listing before a client buys your service, and they’ll want to know that they can deliver what you need quickly. So make sure it’s clear – it will show the buyer you are a professional and give them confidence that you have a plan for how you’re going to deliver the service.
5) Respond Quickly, or Risk the Sale!
A lot of people come to Envato Studio with a hard deadline they need to meet. If you wait too long to answer a question or respond to their brief, then you risk them reaching out to someone else. Show that you care about their time by being prompt with your replies (try to take no longer than 24 hours at most – ideally you will respond in a few hours, even earlier if you are online at the time). Be honest about your capacity to take on the job and to deliver within the promised timeframe, if you are overloaded and say yes to the work but can’t deliver in time, you’ll quickly burn out and receive poor reviews. It only takes a cursory glance at successful provider’s customer reviews to know that people love an attentive provider who is prompt and delivers within their promised timeframe (even earlier is a sure way to delight your client!).
6) A Professional Profile Page
If a client likes your service, they will often check your profile page to learn a little bit more about you and the other services you offer. Don’t disappoint them! Spend the time to introduce yourself and your skills. What are you great at? Talk about it and link to examples of your work. Why not choose some of your favorite reviews to feature on your profile as a testimonial. It’s also really important to show who you are and to express your brand identity as a service provider. Make sure you’ve got a high quality avatar – either your face, an illustration or something which reflects your brand like a logo. This is a great way to make a personal connection with your customers. Don’t forget to include links to your social networks so your best customers can stay in the loop with your new services and offers!
