How Creatives Can Use The Marketplaces to Celebrate the Art of Photography

Photography plays an important role at Envato. We have a photography Marketplace, publish photography tutorials, and celebrate our milestones on our Flickr channel. Well, Monday is World Photography Day, and in this post we’ll let you know how you can celebrate with us.

What is World Photography Day?

Four years ago, Aussie photographer Korske Ara founded a special day to celebrate photography – August 19th. He chose that date because, 170 years earlier, the French government announced the photographic process was a gift “Free to the World”.

I asked Korske about what inspired him to create World Photography Day:

Photography is an invention that has revolutionised the way we see the world. We can visit places without leaving our home. We can share adventures with friends in another city, and we can watch grandchildren grow up thousands of kilometers away.

The nostalgia we feel when we look through photos of past adventures is a great example of how meaningful these memories are. To think that there was a time when photography didn’t exist. I believe that the ability we have today to capture these memories is worth celebrating!

Stay updated about World Photography Day by subscribing to the newsletter or liking them on Facebook.

More than ‘just’ a picture and more than ‘just’ art. A photograph is a memory frozen in time, emotions and all.

Join Us, and Celebrate World Photography Day

What does photography mean to you? Capturing the emotions of a special experience or event? Expressing yourself artistically? Enjoying the world from a different person’s point of view? Take hold of that as you celebrate the day.

Here are three ways you can get involved.

1. Create a PhotoDune Collection

Find some images on PhotoDune that inspire you, and create a public collection. Share your collection with us in the comments.

World Photography Day’s Korske Ara and our own Phototuts+ editor Cameron Knight have created collections of photos that inspire them. You can find them here:

2. Visit Phototuts+

Spend some time on Monday improving your photography skills—visit Phototuts+.

Recent tutorials include shooting sunsets, micro macro, Apple’s Aperture, and getting great skin without Photoshop. And stay tuned for their coverage of World Photography Day.

3. Add a Photo to the World Photography Day Gallery

Finally, you can join the worldwide World Photography Day community, and add a photo to their open gallery.

It’s open for uploads until August 25th. Don’t forget to check out everyone else’s submissions.
