What is World Photography Day?
Four years ago, Aussie photographer Korske Ara founded a special day to celebrate photography – August 19th. He chose that date because, 170 years earlier, the French government announced the photographic process was a gift “Free to the World”.
I asked Korske about what inspired him to create World Photography Day:
Photography is an invention that has revolutionised the way we see the world. We can visit places without leaving our home. We can share adventures with friends in another city, and we can watch grandchildren grow up thousands of kilometers away.
The nostalgia we feel when we look through photos of past adventures is a great example of how meaningful these memories are. To think that there was a time when photography didn’t exist. I believe that the ability we have today to capture these memories is worth celebrating!

More than ‘just’ a picture and more than ‘just’ art. A photograph is a memory frozen in time, emotions and all.
