2019 trends

Out with the old, in with the new.

Well, not quite yet—there’s still a week or two left before the fireworks go off and we all start making those beautiful, optimistic resolutions that shine as bright as a Roman candle before fizzling in the February gloom. But still, it’s a good time to look back on 2018 and peer forward into 2019 to spot some trends coming our way. So we asked our experts across the company what trends they expect to see in the coming year

Here’s what to watch out for in 2019:

Design & Illustration

Pantone recently set some new design trends in motion with its selection of Living Coral as the Pantone Color of the Year 2019. But design, of course, is about much more than colour. Over on Envato Tuts+, designer Grace Fussell took us through some other trends to watch out for in 2019, from nautical stripes to chiselled serif typefaces. Here are a couple more design trends you can expect to see next year.

#1: Brand Customisation

"A strong trend I expect to see more of over the next year is brand customisation and personalisation. Think custom cut fonts and illustration styles all to yourself that set brands apart and elevate them above the norm."
Steven Scott
Steven Scott
Envato Designer

For example, why not use one of these unique fonts, or take them as inspiration for designing your own?

#2: Abstract, Colourful Patterns

"Perhaps influenced by the resurgence of 80s style, abstract and colourful patterns will be popping up in design. Think Memphis Group patterns and colour schemes."
Sharon Milne
Sharon Milne
Tuts+ Design & Illustration Editor

#3: Depth and Layers

"I see that people are playing with dimension and layering again. Different to the super flat style a while back."
Kate McInnes
Quality Media Specialist

Web Design

WordPress just shook up the web design world with its launch of Gutenberg, a completely new way for people to create posts and pages on WordPress sites. Here are some of the broader changes that our experts expect as a result of that change, along with some other exciting new trends and technologies now coming to the fore.

#4: The Rise of the Page Builders

"I think we’ll see even more minimal/clean SVG types and performance-focused themes which utilise Gutenberg. Modern development techniques like WP Rig and Mythic will definitely help in theme development, which is getting more and more complicated nowadays."
Kailoon Chan
Senior Reviewer, ThemeForest

Kailoon also thinks themes could now provide a fully fledged page builder based on Gutenberg, including header/footer customisation. It’s going to be a year for content-creation tools as well, he says, with users flocking to plugins like Elementor and WP Page Builder, which provide pre-designed templates, elements, add-ons, etc.

#5: New Features, New Layout Boundaries

"Competition in the design application space has never been fiercer! Sketch, Adobe XD, Figma, Invision Studio and others are all upping their game and smashing out features to make UI and UX design better."
Ian Yates
Tuts+ Web Design Editor

Why not start off 2019 by getting up to speed with those new and improved apps?

In terms of actual design for the web, expect layout boundaries to be pushed further. It’s taking time to shake off old habits, but CSS Grid and Flexbox now enjoy enough browser support for designers to use them with confidence.

#6: Voice Assistants

"The use of voice assistants will continue to increase in 2019. They will remain a predominantly non-visual medium, so finding the right balance between visual cues and providing context and direction with words in the user interface will be crucial."
Lauren Macnab
Digital Content Strategist

Video

In the video world, too, a big player made a major move in 2018. This time it was Adobe, with its launch of a brand new editing app called Adobe Rush. See what our experts see on the horizon in 2019.

#7: Rush, Particle Animation, and More

"Adobe has a new NLE on the scene, Rush, which works with Premiere templates: a boon for video makers who don’t need a full-fledged production suite. Particle animation, enabled by ever-more-powerful graphics cards, will trickle down to all kinds of video projects and programs. Instagram-esque presets and quick-changing picture styles will remain popular, too."
Jackson Couse
Jackson Couse
Tuts+ Video Editor

#8: A Plethora of New Templates

"Adobe’s development of the Essential Graphics panel and Motion Graphics Template format has forever altered the video industry. Users of the once graphics-stunted Premiere Pro have been given a brand new arsenal, allowing Premiere editors to add robust, professional animated graphics into their video projects with just a few clicks."
Tyson Frantz
Senior VideoHive Reviewer

What that means is that After Effects template authors now have an entirely new audience in which to create content, and Premiere editors have a burgeoning ecosystem of gorgeous graphics to choose from.

As more and more video editors flock to the graphics template market, 2019 could very well signal the largest period of growth for the Premiere template category.

How many templates can you handle?

This is just a tiny sample of the 50,000+ After Effects templates on VideoHive.

The newer Premiere Pro category has more than 1,500 items, with more being added all the time.

Audio

What will people be listening to in 2019? We can’t predict the chart-topping albums, the breakout acts or the celebrity feuds coming our way next year, but we do know a thing or two about stock audio. Here’s what to expect.

#9: Upbeat, Energetic Audio

"2019 is looking like another exciting year ahead, where upbeat and energetic vibes will dominate stock audio demand. Regardless of styles, from epic to inspirational, tracks that convey confidence and healthy energy will always be go-to winners, especially those with subtle but memorable leads, making room for great stories and narratives to happen."
Adrien Gardiner
Audio Content Specialist

Here are a few excellent examples that made waves throughout 2018:

Code

The launch of WordPress Gutenberg will affect more than just web design. There’s a whole ecosystem of plugins and extensions that can now take advantage of WordPress’s new capabilities. Read on to find out how that will play out in 2019.

#10: An Explosion of Block Plugins

"In 2019, I predict we’ll see an explosion of Block Plugins for the new WordPress Editor (Gutenberg). We should see phase two of the Gutenberg project moving on from the editor to improve other areas of WordPress (like widgets and menus). I also predict that page builders like Elementor will continue to improve at an amazing pace and the eco-system around them (templates, add-ons, etc.) will continue to grow as well!"
Aaron Rutley
Aaron Rutley
Product Manager

Photography

Expect 2019 to usher in a new aesthetic in photography. Some of the most popular trends have now run their course, and we could be all set for a year in which the photos we use more accurately reflect the real world around us.

#11: Ditch the Special Effects

"For 2019, the current demand for authenticity is expected to maintain its growth. The heavy vignetting, retro filtering, desaturation and added lens flares/effects will start looking old (and not in the way it was intended). This is a great opportunity to embrace diversity and inclusion, while producing natural-looking, credible images that customers can actually relate to."
Gaby Jalbert
Photo Content Specialist

Another photography trend to watch out for is drone photography, as the technology keeps evolving and becoming more accessible every year. Drone shots are now widely used in movies and advertisements, as well as on YouTube and social media. This fresh perspective on life should retain a strong presence for years to come.

A Quick Look Back at 2018

In 2018, Envato announced a new addition to the family: Placeit. If you haven’t tried it yet, you really should. The site lets you create logos, mockups, flyers, T-shirt designs and a whole lot more—all from your internet browser.

We also covered a lot of ground in other areas this year. A few highlights from the blog and elsewhere:

Plenty more cool stuff also happened, of course, and you can read about it all in our Year End Review.

Over to You...

As the inimitable Yogi Berra once said, “It’s tough to make predictions, especially about the future.”

Our experts are immersed in their respective fields every day and have drawn on a wealth of experience to tell us what to look out for in 2019, but they could be sideswiped by a major product launch or an unexpected cultural shift.

What do you think? Will these predictions will come true, or do you have your own ideas about what’s coming in 2019? Jump over to the Envato forums and have your say.

How Ubiquity Became a Liability for Burberry https://envato.com/blog/how-ubiquity-became-a-liability-for-burberry/ Sun, 23 Sep 2018 23:49:24 +0000 https://envato.com/?p=73284 What brands can learn from the overexposure of Burberry’s iconic tartan pattern.

The post How Ubiquity Became a Liability for Burberry appeared first on Envato.

]]>

It’s the early 2000s. And, on the streets of London, it’s raining.

As is natural, people are bursting their umbrellas open. But as they do, a precarious view forms from above. All the umbrellas are lined with the same Burberry pattern.

While many brands would relish the chance to be ubiquitous, for a luxury label overexposure isn’t necessarily a good thing.

Founded by Thomas Burberry in 1856, the brand became a household name after mastering the art of water resistant coats. By the time World War I rolled around, the item had become so trusted by Britons that they were issued to officers, earning the name “trench coats”.

The coats would become an icon in their own right. Synonymous with arctic explorers, and famous aviators. After the war they transitioned from being an outdoor garment to a luxury item.

And in the 1920s, a beige, black, red, and white pattern would be added to the inside lining of the garment. It would become the brand’s emblem.

The coats continued to pop up in notable places, including on Humphrey Bogart, and Ingrid Bergman in Casablanca.

But on an unassuming day at the Paris Burberry store, the underexposed pattern would take its first step to becoming an icon. The store’s manager was trying to liven up the display of trench coats when she decided to turn one of them inside out. It gave her the splash of color she needed. But also produced a sea of customers clamoring for more items baring the brand’s tartan.

In response to the demand, Burberry released an umbrella covered in it, which sold out quickly, and a cashmere scarf, which received a similar reception.

The 70s and 80s saw the rise of the “Sloane Ranger”. People Town & Country describe as not exactly aristocrats, but as people who “belonged to certain families had been educated at certain schools, had certain jobs, drove certain cars, had country houses decorated just so, and wore a uniform that made them easy to spot.”

That uniform consisted of items from Gucci, Hermes, and, of course, Burberry. But in tasteful, light-touch ways. “Quiet luxury is still luxury after all,” the publication notes.

Although the 70s and 80s brought a new demographic to these luxury brands, its clothes very much remained in the hands of the elite.

That was until the 90s.

The “Logo wave” of that era saw lower classes get their hands on clothing with luxury logos on them, with little regard for whether they were authentic or counterfeit. Gucci, Chanel, and Burberry logos were being loudly worn by lower income demographics, and swaths of tourists.

In some ways the company embraced the trend, bathing the cast of a Kate Moss led brand campaign from 2000 in clothes with the pattern.

And for a while the strategy was a success, with sales increasing in the UK and US.

But ubiquity came at a cost.

And in 2002, a tabloid photo of British soap opera actress Daniella Westbrook wearing head to toe Burberry tartan (even her child’s pram is lined with it) represented a watershed moment in the value the company was getting.

The rise of the “chav” – lower income lads, and football hooligans – bathing themselves in the brand’s emblem didn’t help. Burberry’s international sales skyrocketed, but their UK sales dwindled.

“If it rained in London in the early 2000s, a sea of Burberry umbrellas would envelope the street,” according to Sleek.

With its brand overexposed, in 2006, Angela Ahrendts became the company’s new CEO. And she, along with Christopher Bailey as its chief creative officer, decided to aggressively buy back licenses of its tartan pattern and become more restrictive of where it was used.

Restoring the pattern to being more of an embellishment on the inside of a garment, helped lift the brand’s revenue 27 percent in 2011.

And although the brand is dipping its toe back into its 90s “chav” past as part of a streetwear collaboration with Gosha Rubchinskiy for fashion week in 2018, balance has now been restored on the rainy streets of London.

Ways to Launch Your Website Quickly, Without Sacrificing Quality https://envato.com/blog/ways-launch-website-quickly-without-sacrificing-quality/ Mon, 08 Jan 2018 05:00:33 +0000 https://envato.com/?p=63510 Every business wants to put their best foot forward when it comes to their website. Image: New Business Project Start Up by Faber14

As a web designer, when I ask clients about their timeline for launching their new website, the usual response is: “As soon as possible.” This makes perfect sense as every business wants to put their best foot forward when it comes to their website. But there are often challenges in taking a website from concept to finished product in short order.

For one, hurrying your way through the process can lead to mistakes. It’s often the little details in both the layout and content that suffer from your rushing around. That could show up in the form of misspellings or even a broken layout. When you’re in a major hurry, the results reflect in the overall quality of the website.

Thankfully, you can save yourself a lot of trouble by taking some steps to ensure that you can get your site launched quickly while maintaining a high standard of quality.

Don’t Start From Scratch

When time really is of the essence, there may simply not be enough of it to warrant starting from scratch. Going through the process of building an entire website from ground zero will make it difficult to get up and running on time. However, that doesn’t mean that you can’t still have a beautiful, highly-functional website.

There are tools and services you can use that will speed up the process. A site builder, for example, will enable you to start out with a pre-designed template that you can customize to suit your needs. While it means the look of your site may not be 100% original, you can change things up enough to make it uniquely your own.

If you’re looking for serious functionality, using a well-made WordPress theme is a great solution. All of the hard design and development work has been done for you. From there, you can integrate any necessary plugins to add those must-have features. This will let you take advantage of the powerful WordPress platform without all of the extra effort.

This step alone will put you miles ahead in terms of getting things done within your desired timeframe.

Narrow the Focus of Your Content

Craftsma by EwaStudio

Beyond the design process, the biggest cause for delay in getting a website launched is developing content. So it stands to reason that the more content you have to prepare, the harder it will be to hit your deadline.

If getting your website launched quickly is a top priority, then it’s okay to start small when it comes to content. While it would be nice to start things off with a few dozen carefully-crafted blog posts touting your business – it’s a bit impractical. Instead, think about the basics that visitors will need to know like the services or products you offer, contact information, etc.

Once your site is up and running, you’ll be able to add content at a comfortable pace. This can actually be a good thing in that repeat visitors will have something new to check out. The other advantage of starting small is that you can truly focus on making the most important content the best it can be.

Enlist a Helping Hand (Or Two)

Building a website isn’t easy. There will likely be certain tasks during the process that eat up more time than you anticipated. Things that looked simple in the beginning can turn into a complicated mess in a hurry.

When you’re mired in such a situation, bringing in an expert to help can get things back on track. That will allow you to focus on other parts of the project while your hired hand(s) can take care of whatever pesky issues arise.

But you don’t necessarily have to wait for something like this to pop up unannounced. For instance, if you know that there’s a specific part of the process that’s outside of your comfort zone, that’s the time to think about getting some help. Planning ahead will help you avoid a derailment while on the way to the finish line.

Make the Hard Choices

To paraphrase an old saying: If you want something that’s good, fast and cheap – pick two. The point being that you’re probably not going to get all three of those things at once. However, that saying may be less relevant for those who are able to make some tough decisions early on.

When “fast” is first on your personal wishlist, that means that you’ll inevitably have to make some tradeoffs. Maybe that means holding off on that complicated functionality until later on. Or it could be that you’ll have to take your focus off of other matters in order to get your website launched.

By making those types of decisions, you may actually be placing yourself on a path to achieve all three traits – or at least get close to it. When you realize that you can’t have “everything now”, you can concentrate your efforts on what is doable within the allotted time and budget.

In that way, maybe “good, fast and cheap” isn’t so unrealistic.

You Can Do It!

Sure, having a tight timeline for launching your website is a challenge. But it’s far from impossible. So often, we try to cram all of our wants and needs into the tiniest of spaces. The better approach is in taking that timeline and adjusting our expectations around it.

With realistic expectations, we can then turn our attention into building the best website possible. We can use tools and services to get us off to a running start. Content can be narrowed down to focus on our most pressing needs. And, if there are areas where some extra help would be appreciated, we can be proactive in seeking it out.

Perhaps the hardest part of the process involves deciding what has to be included and what can wait. But it may well be the most important factor in getting things right.

Keep in mind that launching a website in itself is full of hurdles to get past. Doing so within a compressed timeline adds even more obstacles. But with the right approach, you’ll put yourself in a position to launch a top-quality site in less time than you thought possible.

22 Must-Have WooCommerce Plugins for 2018 https://envato.com/blog/22-must-woocommerce-plugins-2018/ Tue, 02 Jan 2018 21:29:35 +0000 https://envato.com/?p=63516 For store owners, WooCommerce gives you full control over you store, allowing you to sell anything online.

The post 22 Must-Have WooCommerce Plugins for 2018 appeared first on Envato.

]]>

WooCommerce powers over 28% of all online stores and is the most popular eCommerce platform on the web. Not bad for a bootstrapped product that you can download for free.

For store owners, WooCommerce gives you full control over you store, allowing you to sell anything online. And for developers, the plugin is open source, extendable, adaptable and integrates seamlessly with WordPress

There are hundreds of extensions available for WooCommerce that can help you add greater functionality to the core software. So whether you want better manage your store, grow your marketing efforts, display shipping information or even save time calculating sales tax, there’s an extension to help you do it.

In this post, I’ll share 22 of the best WooCommerce extensions available in our marketplace to help you improve your online store as we count down the days to 2018. Not only will these plugins make it easier to manage your store, but they will also help you increase your sales.

Let’s kick off this collection with an extension that plays on the psychology behind buying decisions. With XL WooCommerce Sales Triggers, you can add one of 7 psychological triggers to your online store. These include:

 • Displaying a countdown timer to create urgency

 • Showing the items left in store to induce scarcity

 • Displaying potential cost savings to trigger loss aversion

 • Sharing the most recent sales activity for social proof

 • Displaying a list of what your store guarantees to reassure shoppers

 • Displaying the satisfaction rate to increase shopper confidence

 • Highlighting your store’s best sellers to reduce anxiety

It’s a clever plugin that uses sales tactics employed by stores like Amazon, eBay and Zappos to increase buyer confidence, reassure people who are nervous about checking out, and create a sense of urgency around making a purchase.

This useful and versatile extension lets you add additional product options to your store so you can provide more information to shoppers. Using a simple and intuitive interface, you can create forms (and use conditional logic), add new pricing options and create priced product variations.

The form builder provides advanced functionality so you can create checkboxes, radio buttons, select boxes, text areas, input fields and add range and color pickers.

If you’ve reached a point where you’re feeling limited by the basic setting WooCommerce provides, this extension will help you achieve even more with your store.

Want to earn some extra cash using your WooCommerce? With WooCommerce Amazon Affiliates you advertise Amazon products in your store and receive advertising feeds from qualifying purchases. You can also receive advertising feeds from products your site visitors buy and visit, not just the products you advertise thanks to the extension’s built-in 90 days cookie feature.

The on-site cart feature enables your customers to checkout with any Amazon products they want to buy using your store, which means more commission fees for you.

This extension is constantly being updated and features some nice additions, including shipping availability, cross-selling, Amazon coupons and reviews, and geo-targeting.

Help your customers find products in your store easier and faster with this useful must-have extension. It provides advanced product filtering functionality so customers can do everything from basic searches to advanced filtering with specific criteria.

Setting up this extension is a straightforward process and the admin interface is easy to navigate and configure. The filter is fully customizable and you can choose layouts, colors, filter criteria and terms, and create filter presets.

This is a great plugin for making your site easier to navigate and show shoppers what you have in stock.

When your store has hundreds of products, providing shipping options can be a headache. Fortunately, Table Rate Shipping for WooCommerce takes the stress out of setting up multiple shipping options based on a variety of conditions and pricing models.

This extension provides a comprehensive and well-organized settings page, making set up a breeze. Shipping options include an extensive list of conditions based on price, quantity, weight, dimensions, shipping class, categories, specific products and dates. You can also provide numerous cost types including flat, percentage and different multiplies for all numerical product data.

No matter what your pricing strategy is, this extension can help you achieve it. This all-purpose pricing and promotion tool provides a comprehensive list of pricing methods and conditions that you can mix and match to fit your online store.

There are lots of ways you could use this plugin, including for sales, promotions, special offers, bulk pricing, tiered pricing, bundle pricing, member pricing, loyalty programs and even location-based pricing. In addition, you can conditionally increase your prices or charge extra fees when needed.

Here are a few examples of what you can do with this extension:

 • Run a Christmas, Easter or Black Friday promotion
 • Set up clearance or flash sales
 • Clear stock – “All shoes 10% off until midnight!”
 • Create incentives – “Free case with every phone purchase!”
 • Reward loyal customers – “VIP members get 25% off items at checkout”

This comprehensive cloud-based solution allows you to manage online sales and process orders for your physical store at the point of sale using WooCommerce. What’s more, there are no monthly fees or hosting costs so you can activate this plugin and start using it right away without worrying about hidden costs.

Features include cash management, barcode scanning, order notes, product add-ons, currency rounding and reporting/analytics. The intuitive interface makes it easy to manage stock, print and email receipts, and offer discounts and coupons.

This is a great extension if you want to bring your online shop into your physical store.

Do you offer car rentals or some other product that people can book and hire? This extension offers everything you need to run your business through your WooCommerce store. It features a comprehensive set of features, including pricing, booking calendar, unlimited bookable products, inventory management, product availability control, pricing discounts, and the ability to request a quote.

You can also provide time or data-based bookings, set a general, daily or monthly price, in addition to many other settings.

Whether you’re a developer or a store owner who doesn’t code, this handy extension will help you create flexible shipping rates for your store. There are lots of options that allow you to set shipping rates based on conditions based on the cart (i.e. tax, coupon, weight, shipping class), user (zip code, city, state, country, user role) and product (width, height, stock, category etc).

The extension also provides conditional logic and multiple shipping methods, making it easy to configure and charge what you want to for shipping. For example, you could set your shipping costs based on the weight of what the customer is purchasing and charge more for heavier items.

Whether you sell t-shirts, business cards or mugs, this plugin provides the features you need to sell any kind of custom product in your store. Say, for example, you want to sell custom hats. You choose what kinds of hats shoppers can buy and what parts of the hate can be customized, including colors, prints and logos.

Products can be customized in any number of ways. Customers can upload images (i.e. JPG, PNG and SVG), use a color picker (or choose from a color preset you set), create and style text, and edit images.

What’s cool about this particular extension is the interface it provides for designing products. It’s user-friendly and just looks really cool – an easy win if you’re looking to further impress customers using your store.

According to the Baymard Institute, the cart abandonment rate for online retailers is 69.23%. If you’ve already put in place other measures to reduce abandonment for your store, this useful extension could help you get customers back and increase sales.

Here’s how CartBack works: After you install the extension, it adds a “Send to Messenger” checkbox to your product pages. When a customer adds an item to their cart, they are automatically opted in to receive Facebook Messenger alerts. If the customer doesn’t check out, he/she will get two reminders, which you can set.

It’s a useful chatbox and something many online companies like PayPal are already using to provide customers with information about their online activities.

WOOF is another powerful and flexible product filtering extension that lets shoppers search your online search using specific criteria, including categories, custom product attributes, tags, custom taxonomies and price.

For developers who want to create something a little different from the norm, this extension provides an API for even more flexibility.

Other features include shortcodes and a widget and AJAX mode for shop and category pages, which is super handy for speeding up your site and delivering a better user experience for shoppers.

Often, it’s difficult trying to find the perfect gift, whether it’s for a loved one’s birthday, an anniversary or Christmas. While giving cash can come off as lazy, gift cards provide the ideal alternative. They’re a simple convenience for shoppers that offers flexibility.

With this extension, you can create gift cards for any type of product, automatically generate emails for your gift cards and enable offline availability so customers can choose them in physical stores. Plus, there are lots of well-designed templates for any occasion, including Easter, Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, Thanksgiving, Valentine’s Day and Diwali.

We’ve covered a lot of extensions in this collection so far that add front-end extra functionality to your store to help shoppers. This extension, however, is for backend to help you bulk edit your products. With 44 built-in fields that are searchable and editable, and the ability to create, duplicate and delete products, this extension is a must-have for inventory management.

The search and edit features of this extensions are super advanced. Say, for example, you want to update the pricing for all women’s t-shirts that you have in stock that are tagged a certain size. You can do that with this extension. You can also export products to CSV and filter products based on a huge number of variables, including price, SKU, title and category.

Emails are important when you run an online store. From sending receipts to updating customers on shipping, the emails you send leave a lasting impression on customers and whether they’ll return to your store to buy more.

This extension lets you create beautiful transactional emails so you don’t have to use the default designs. You can customize colors, the header and footer, add custom links and social icons, and updates what the email says using shortcodes.

What’s more, you can preview and send/resend emails for existing WooCommerce orders, so if a customer accidentally deletes a receipt, you can quickly issue another copy – a quick win for customer service.

Are you interested in setting up auctions for your online store like eBay? With this extension you can create auctions for your products, set start and end times and easily control how your auctions look through simple customizations.

Like eBay, you can display auction items that are ending soon, display featured auctions and display the current bid in multiple currencies. On the backend, you can control how product items are displayed, set bid increments and the item’s condition, and set the bidding start price.

Badges provide an eye-catching way to liven up your product pages, grab your customers’ attention and inform them of sales and discounts.

This extension replaces the default WooCommerce sales badges with well-designed SVG graphics for faster display. There are many different colors and customizable styles to choose from. You can even set a different badge for each product, set special badges for holidays and show customers how much they’ll save when buying a product.

There are 15 preset badges included as well as two bonus Christmas designs. Want to create your own badges? You can do that too.

Do you run a printing company? With this easy to use extension, you can enable customers to design and customize your base products, from t-shirts and badges to phone cases and anything else you can dream up. What’s great about this particular extension is the design interface – it looks fantastic and is easy to use on any device, whether you’re using a desktop or a smartphone. With the product design interface you can drag and drop to resize, move items, set dimensions, colors and text, and allow customers to undo changes if they change their mind.

Another great feature is the ability to save and re-use your design and share it on social media – a great way to encourage word-of-mouth and increase traffic to your store.

When you’re running an online store, providing currency conversion is a must. After all, you want as many shoppers as possible to visit your store and allowing them to view your products in their local currency will make them feel more at home, no matter what currency they live in.

This useful extension allows you to switch product prices and display currency conversions in real-time. There are some useful features, like widgets and shortcodes so you can customize where you want currencies to display. One interesting feature is the ability to create your own custom currency – maybe something useful for gamers?

Allowing customers to track the delivery of their online purchase is convenient for two very important reasons: it allows customers to easily check when their order is due to arrive and it free you up from having to answer customer inquiries about order status.

WooCommerce Order Tracker provides tracking for FedEx and Canada Post, with more shipping options coming soon. This extension also provides email notifications so you can update customers on their order status and customizable tracking templates.

According to Baymard Institute, 27% of shoppers abandon their carts because the checkout process is too long and complicated. A simple way to improve your checkout flow and make it easier for shoppers to complete their purchase is with a multistep checkout.

This extension helps you create a checkout wizard by splitting the default WooCommerce checkout page into different sections. This allows customers to move through your checkout without getting confused or overwhelmed. You can style your checkout using horizontal and vertical responsive layouts.

When you’re caught up in the day-to-day running of your online store, it’s easy to forget about one very important thing: reviewing the success of your business. With this extension, you can generate a complete report of your recent orders, a sales order summary, top product views, coupons, order status, stock, shopping, tax, categories… You can pretty much keep an eye on anything and everything to do with your store.

Here are a few examples of what you can do with this powerful reporting tool:

 • View sales by days, months – in fact, any time period
 • Generate customer history reports
 • Great a tax and refund report
 • See which categories of your products are top sellers
 • View all orders by status, gross and net amount, shopping amount and tax
 • Display products by stock levels

Another great feature is the ability to set your desired monthly sale amount (aka projected sales) and then view a report of projected sales versus actual sales for each month of the year.

Conclusion

This list barely scratches the surface of what you’ll find in our plugin marketplace. 2017-transparent

It’s been a big year.

To recap, we’ve put together this list – curated by the team at Envato – of our top ten trends of the year, and predictions for what will be popular in 2018. Of course, there’s a lot more that happened in 2017 than what’s in this top ten.

A few honorable mentions for trends this year:

Here’s the list of our top ten trends of 2017:

#1: Geometric shapes

"Geometric and polygon art was big in 2017. Backgrounds, textures, and more, all with regular lines and repeating patterns."
David Appleyard
Editor, Envato Tuts+

From zig-zig geo patterns to retro triangles and designs, we saw geometric patterns everywhere this year. It’s also a simple style to try some DIY design – you can learn about it in 60 seconds, or try your hand at creating your own simple geometric pattern.

#2: All tropical everything

"2017 had us dreaming of luxurious holidays, complete with lush palm trees, exotic fruit and beautiful wildlife. It was a real feast for the eyes."
Kate McInnes
Quality Media Specialist, Envato

Kate’s honorable mention in design trends: fidget spinners, which got so big this year that they made it into the stock graphics & photography scene.

#3: Fast typography in video

"One of the biggest trends of this year is fast typography. In an era where we’re constantly overwhelmed by the amount of information being thrown at us, the popularity of templates that help deliver messages in fast, visually engaging ways has risen.
Dom Hennequin
Community & Blog Editor, Envato

Fast typography templates:

#4: Color fonts

"Color fonts are poised to take over the graphic design world in 2018... this unashamedly in-your-face trend promises to put the fun back into typography."
Grace Fussell
Writer, Tuts+

The Fiesta Color font (pictured below – available to download on Envato Elements or DIY with this tutorial) highlights a new trend of colorful, custom fonts. We think this trend will continue into 2018.

#5: Future bass

"THE dominant 2017 audio trend on AudioJungle was Future Bass. While there've been a few noteworthy emergences, such as the SynthWave renaissance we're seeing, it's the contagious sub-lines, the slick sidechaining, and the catchy chopped vocals that have made Future Bass the big consistent winner this year, which is still non-stop exploding.
AudioJungle review team
Envato

What’s next in audio trends for 2018? The reviewers said that “we may expect to see a continued and rising interest in ’80s Synthwave (à la Blade Runner, Stranger Things), Hybrid HipHop tracks (sporty stuff!) and we also have the more subtle Chill-Step showing strong signs of proliferation.”

#6: Simplicity in email design

"I think email will become sharper, smarter and more simplified... there will still be GIF's, but they'll be subtle and interactive at times. Text and content will be more concise, and I think emails will be created based on that premise. I imagine we'll actually see more text-dominant emails with text links, and less overwhelming imagery."

screencapture-mail-google-mail-u-0-1513295945178

#7: Return of the 90's (and 80's)

"2017 was big on bringing back loads of 90's design, especially early 90's American pop influenced design. We're seeing more nods to the 80's creeping in. 2018 could see us rehashing more 80's & 90's pop designs, as well as grunge, earthy tones being used in creative ways."
Sharon Milne
Editor, Envato Tuts+

#8: 2D + 3D design

"We're going to see a lot more of 3D and faux 3d effects, abstract & geometrical elements flowing into the designs to help enhance the visual impact of landing pages, hero sections and newsletters. This will naturally also expand into print and out-of-home advertising platforms. With the evolution of screen technology in recent years, motion graphics will be taking advantage of this design language and have a particularly strong presence in 2018."
Calin Teodorescu
Social Media, Envato

Can you tell the difference between stock photos and 3D designs?

Check out our side-by-side comparisons: How 3D Renders Are Being Used for 2D Artwork

#9: More microinteractions

"These small “product-related moments” add magic to sites, delighting and surprising users, while at the same time engaging users and enhancing user experience."
Jenni McKinnon
Freelance writer, Envato

A microinteraction is a small moment that accomplishes a single task. We’ve seen them everywhere from social media sites to our WordPress themes on Themeforest, and it’s a design detail that will only grow in popularity.

#10: Print isn't dead

"Designers feel strongly and positively about print, and print remains crucial to how professional graphic designers make a living. Print lends itself to certain audiences and offerings where communication needs to be retained, contemplated, touched or trusted."
Eric Schwartz
Content Insights Manager, Envato

According to a study done by Graphic Design USA (GDUSA), 97% of graphic designers work on print design projects, compared to 36% who work on TV, film, or video projects. The top print project types include brochures, marketing materials, cards, and direct mail.

Agree or disagree? Let us know what your favorite trends of 2017 were, and what you predict will be big in 2018.

Google search’s ability to find content directly connected to the words we put in, as well as matching our intent, never fails to amaze. This intelligent and predictive search capability is known as a semantic search.

Keywords certainly aren’t the only important factor with it comes SEO and it’s becoming increasingly important to also incorporate SEO strategies that will harness the power of semantic searches on your website. At its simplest, this involves anticipating the user’s intent and determine the context of what they’re searching.

However, to implement such strategies, you’ll need a basic understanding of the system around semantic search.

What is a Semantic Search?

Simply put, a semantic search is a more intelligent search that takes a look at a user’s history and general context of words searched for to give relevant results.

The “intent” of your search is for what you are searching, while the “context” is for what you mean to search. To give an example, if you search for the “Beatles”, how does Google know to show your results for the band instead of assuming you made a mistake and misspelled a search about insects?

Google uses the vast amount of data it’s collected about you as a user, as well as trends for similar searches and results, to determine the context and, therefore, what you actually want to find when you search “Beatles”.

Image:The Beetles Clipart by Jumsoft

Semantic searches are what allows Google to interpret conversational questions, autocorrect your spelling in searches, and provide images and graphics that also match your queries.

Semantic Search: How Does Google Connect the Dots?

In 2013, Google launched the Hummingbird algorithm which was the biggest overhaul to its search engine since 2009. Because people communicate through conversation, not keywords, Google felt it necessary to make serious changes. According to Google’s Senior Vice President Amit Singhal, the new algorithm was designed to better understand questions and quickly answer them.

Hummingbird understands that words have multiple meanings, so it uses search history, user location, spelling, intent, and context to better understand what you are actually looking for when you type in search words. Because of this, Google is able to quickly analyze full questions. From there, it’s able to identify and rank answers to those questions from previously indexed content.

Google is able to deliver all this information through the use of a search engine component that used to be called the Knowledge Graph, which is now known as the Knowledge Vault. Google isn’t the only search engine with a vault of user knowledge. Bing, Yahoo, and others also utilize the same sort of system in an attempt to dredge up the most relevant search results for users.

Why Is It Important to Use Semantic Search Tactics?

Using semantic tactics for SEO is important for the same reason that stuffing keywords into content was essential ten or fifteen years ago: good SEO puts your website at the top of search results.

This means:

 • More clicks
 • More page views
 • More unique users
 • More conversions

Of course, the real reason semantic tactics are essential is because older SEO strategies are simply not as effective. At this point, some popular SEO strategies that were popular even a year ago have become obsolete, such as the concept that more links mean higher rankings and that single keyword-rich content is essential.

How Do You Improve Your Semantic Search Score?

When developing content to do well in a semantic search, create it with the user in mind. This means you need to develop high-quality content that is worthwhile and substantial.

Ask yourself, “If I were searching for my product, what information would I want to know?” Then, create content that supplies that information—not just information about the product but the type of content that your target market will want to read.

Making essential information easy to locate on your website is another way to improve your semantic score. In fact, you’ll notice that Google sometimes answers a search question by providing, at the top of the search results, an excerpt from a webpage that concisely responds to the question (also known as featured snippets).

With links, like content, more isn’t necessarily better—it’s all about quality. Linking to relevant sites with stronger semantic scores will bolster your score more than linking to many irrelevant, low-ranking sites.

Though jamming keywords and alternative spellings of keywords into content is an obsolete SEO strategy, keywords, especially long-tailed keywords, are still important. Part of creating targeted content is to effectively use tools like Google Keyword Planner or keyword.io.

semantic search

The subsequent content should not only utilize the keywords you’re trying to rank for, but also using associated keywords that will help develop context for search engines. For example, when writing about running, you might also include information about shoes, trails, tracks, fitness, diet, and other information that will be relevant to your target market.

Recall that Google, Bing, and Yahoo had their own versions of the Knowledge Vault. It turns out that they all got together to determine keywords and tags for the best user experience. Take advantage of this by marking up content with tags defined by Schema.org.

How social media sites impact your semantic search score is a bit more complicated than you might expect. Yes, social media is the second best digital marketing channel after a website, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it will improve your ability to rise to the top of a semantic search.

Google’s Matt Cutts explained in 2014, that there was an absence of social signals from the Google Search algorithm. Nonetheless, Google does crawl social sites for data, just as they would any other site. This means that it’s likely that links published on social media pages will be marked as credible backlinks and thus influence a page’s rank.

That aside, your social media sites do influence the content showing up in user’s search results, which makes them exceptionally important to develop as part of any digital marketing campaign.

Tools That Improve Semantic Searchability

There are a variety of tools (and SEO plugins) that can help you develop and test the semantic searchability of your content.

Answer the Public is a visual search tool that fetches and maps keyword suggestions when you search Google and Bing. It attempts to provide insights into the motivations and emotions of the people behind specific search queries.

semantic search

Take advantage of the Google Suggest Feature, which is the autocomplete function you’ll notice when searching. The suggestions presented based on a keyword or phrase typed in can give you insights into relevant and frequent searches.

semantic search

One of the best keyword tools for semantic search specifically is the Semantic Link Search Tool. This tool will help you determine which related keywords you should be including in your posts. Keywordtool.io is also a great tool, as it collects keywords from Google, Apple’s App Store, and Bing autosuggestions based on language, country, or religion.

semantic search

In addition to these, there are other useful tools available to improve your semantic search score, such as Google’s Data Testing Tool, Yandex Checker, Text Razor, and Semaphore.

Are You Harnessing the Power of Semantic Search?

Harnessing the power of semantic searches is straightforward: create quality content. By focusing on intent and context, you’ll naturally be producing posts that will do well and include related single keywords and long-tailed keywords.

Of course, in addition to creating relevant posts to your target market, there are still plenty of ways to tweak content in order to improve your semantic search score.

People are consuming online video at an increasing rate. More than half of all people watch online video every single day.

Videos are highly engaging and compelling to watch, share, and post. Video posts on social media get 1,200 percent more shares than text and image posts combined.

90 percent of consumers find product demo videos helpful to their decision making process. Add in the fact that 59 percent of senior execs prefer video over text, and it’s easy to see why LinkedIn now offers native video on its platform.

Companies who use video enjoy more web traffic, more social shares, and more conversions. With the rise of Snapchat and Facebook Watch, it’s about time LinkedIn joined the social video scene.

What Is LinkedIn Native Video?

As of August 2017, users can now film or upload video directly to LinkedIn using the LinkedIn app on their phones or via the website on their desktop computer. Videos can be as short as 3 seconds, and captured in either vertical or horizontal format.

As brands continue to bend over backwards to humanize themselves to consumers, this new video functionality gives LinkedIn a welcome personality refresh. By its very nature, LinkedIn has always been the most polished and professional of social networks. Now, people can see the face behind the headshot, or the people behind a company.

Sharing a video is as simple as sharing anything else on LinkedIn. Whenever you create a new post, you’ll now see a camera icon or video button.

One of the great things about LinkedIn is that it lets videos shine in all their glory. Once the user clicks play, they instantly take over the screen. The default setting on Facebook, on the other hand, is to start playing videos while they’re still thumbnail size.

And that’s not the only great thing about LinkedIn video. Once you post a video, you get access to the same audience insights you see with all your other LinkedIn posts. Discover the titles and locations of your viewers, where they work, and view engagement stats like total views, likes, and comments. Now you’ll know exactly how well your video content is performing on LinkedIn, since you’ll see insights directly from the app, instead of just seeing your YouTube video views go up without having any idea of whether it was your LinkedIn post that drove them.

There are a few other features worth mentioning. Users can tag people whenever they post a video (probably best to reserve this option for your costars, rather than tagging that one prospect who keeps ignoring your emails). You can also add hashtags to increase the discoverability of your video, and you have 700 characters to sell your video and include links to other content. Especially popular videos can be linked to within the Media section on your LinkedIn profile.

A Few Caveats

Before you faint with excitement, be aware that there are a few drawbacks to LinkedIn video. Chances are these feature gaps will be addressed soon, but you’ll want to be aware of them as you start filming.

Recording:

 • There’s no live streaming – yet. Fortunately, there’s a decent compromise: users can record a video using the LinkedIn app on their phone, and then immediately publish it afterwards as an almost-live video.
 • There are no captioning features available, so you have to rely on users clicking “unmute” to hear what you’re saying, or you can get creative with cue cards or video editing software to add subtitles.
 • Videos are limited to 10 minutes in length, and LinkedIn recommends keeping videos between 30 seconds to 5 minutes for maximum engagement. So don’t plan on using this feature to record entire conference sessions at your latest industry event.

Playback:

 • Videos shot in vertical format get cropped to a square in LinkedIn feed, which can result in some awkward neck shots. However, horizontal videos display full-size in the feed, and the vertical videos do expand once clicked.
 • Videos are muted by default, like on Facebook. Users need to click to hear the sound.

Marketing:

 • While you can link directly to a public video post, there isn’t any embed functionality yet, limiting your ability to host LinkedIn videos on your website and landing pages.
 • LinkedIn Native Video is currently only available to individual users on LinkedIn, not company pages. But your team can arm your marketing and recruiting staff with video assets and ideas to promote your brand on your behalf, and you can always reshare their posts on your page.
 • There’s no dedicated video tab yet, so you have to hope you’ll show up organically in people’s feeds or use hashtags to increase your discoverability.

5 Ways Your Brand Can Use LinkedIn Video

Even with its limitations, LinkedIn video is still a big deal. Native Facebook videos get 10 times as many shares as embedded video, and the average social video keeps 37 percent of viewers watching all the way to the end.

Get ready for your video content to enjoy more success than it has before. Here are five types of video you can create for LinkedIn.

1. Upcycle your content

Content marketers love to “upcycle” their content. This technique allows them to get more out of one piece of content by sharing it in different formats, such as a blog post, podcast, a series of tweets, and video.

Repurpose your blog posts into videos for LinkedIn. You could do a deep-dive on one section from the content, or share the sub-headings so people click through to read more in detail. Here’s an example from Moby Siddique of RedPandas:

Alternately, you could create videos dedicated for social media. Many business professionals log in to LinkedIn every morning to get their daily business news fix from sites like The Wall Street Journal. Now those publishers can share the latest headlines via video posts. Rodrigo Brancatelli, Senior Editor at LinkedIn, shows how the BuzzFeed-style video popular on Facebook can perform just as well on LinkedIn:

2. Humanize your brand

Perhaps the biggest opportunity for businesses with LinkedIn video is the ability to put a face to the brand. Videos of your team brainstorming during a meeting, or sketching new creative, endear customers to your company. Share a compelling video case study or customer testimonial. Videos are expressive and make your brand feel human in ways written materials aren’t capable of.

Videos can amplify your recruiting efforts on LinkedIn. Show a day in the life at your office, or interview employees for an update on their latest project or their best tip of career advice. These will pop a lot more than the “So and so is hiring!” text posts that inundate the main LinkedIn feed. CEO Sam Shank shared a recent team lunch at HotelTonight, earning almost 1000 likes and 50 comments:

3. React to events

Behind-the scenes looks at events are made for social video. Allen Gannett, CEO of TrackMaven, connected with Cathy McPhillips, VP of Marketing for Content Marketing Institute in the hall at the latest Content Marketing World. In the quick video below, she shares her #1 tip for event marketing. It’s timely, it’s relevant, and it’s quick to watch.

Video also transforms boring marketing news into something people will actually pay attention to. People probably won’t read the press release announcing your latest store opening, but they might actually watch a ribbon cutting ceremony on LinkedIn. Adena Friedman, CEO of Nasdaq, made a GIF celebrating MongoDB’s IPO. This fun video shared the news in a way that instantly gets the point across.

4. Explain your product

Some of the most effective types of marketing videos are product explainers, demos, and tutorials. Explain your products or services via LinkedIn video. The video insights may reveal the types of people interested in your product, such as publicists or IT pros, who you can then target in your advertising both on LinkedIn and other networks like Facebook and Google AdWords. You might even begin to create new content targeting those users specifically.

Video helps B2B companies make “boring” products quirky and interesting. Brian White of AgilityWorks Limited knows that screengrabs of CRM software just aren’t as fun to watch as a bunch of toy cars racing around your Macbook. With the power of video and a trending topic (#bigdataweek), he’s able to reach more users and promote his product.

5. Partner with influencers

With LinkedIn Pulse and last year’s foray into Influencer videos, LinkedIn has been on a slow but steady course towards fostering its own group of native influencers. These videos offer another way brands can partner with influencers. Event marketers can interview keynote speakers ahead of time, or give a sneak peek of their presentation, to build interest and attract attendees.

Influencers too have opportunities with LinkedIn video, from product unboxings to sharing their reactions to industry news or conference event sessions. LinkedIn Influencer Goldie Chan demonstrates how LinkedIn can be both a place to discuss professional business updates, as well as a fun social network where you can use video filters. No word yet on how soon these Snapchat-esque filters will be accessible to general LinkedIn users.

Another LinkedIn influencer, Viveka von Rosen, uses video as teasers for her latest LinkedIn Pulse articles:

Get Your (Phone) Camera Ready

If you’ve been ignoring LinkedIn, this video announcement means you really can’t do that anymore. Video boosts user engagement for brands on Facebook and Snapchat, and there’s no reason why it shouldn’t do the same on LinkedIn.

As with anything, jumping on this trend early can help your brand stand out as a major player in the long run.

Clockwise from top: Adobe Creative Cloud, Envato Elements, Mailchimp.

When you’re just getting started as a freelancer, it can be hard to justify adding any new expense to your fledgling business. In the early months of going out on your own, it can take some time to become profitable (and get paid!) and at the beginning, your focus is primarily on making rent and praying that you’ll be able to eat more than oatmeal and ramen noodles for every meal.

Luckily, for many freelancers, this survival state mentality is only temporary. Eventually, you’ll get to the point where you’re wasting time and money by not adopting the use of some paid tools that make it possible to run your business more efficiently.

If you’re ready to scale up your toolset with paid subscriptions that will enable you to be more efficient with time, here are our top picks for any freelance business:

Bookkeeping: Quickbooks

As you add clients and additional expenses to your business, it will become increasingly more difficult to keep track of these things without a system in place. The best bookkeeping systems include reporting features and the ability to search for individual transactions in need of follow up.

Using a tool like Quickbooks allows you to integrate all related financial accounts, like a business bank account, credit card, and/or Paypal account, so no transactions slip through the cracks. Most CPAs are very familiar with Quickbooks, which will come in handy come tax season when mistakes can result in numerous fees for your freelance business.

Quickbooks plans start at $10/month and scale up depending on the specific features your freelance business requires. An alternative paid bookkeeping option is Freshbooks, and a popular free option, if you’re still pinching pennies, is Xero.

Design Tools: Creative Cloud

freelance tools

It’s not the tools that make the artist, but the right equipment can help you bring an idea to life as it was intended. Whether design makes up the majority of your job or not, people in the creative space often find a need to access tools like Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, and Dreamweaver.

The barrier to entry is low now that Adobe has switched these applications to subscription pricing that starts at $19.99/month for access to a single app and $49.99/month for access to all of Adobe’s Creative Cloud apps.

If you’re still in survival mode and don’t necessarily need advanced graphic design features, a popular alternate image creation tool is Canva.

Design Assets & Education: Envato Elements

freelance tools

The best design tools won’t get you very far if you don’t know how to use them. That’s why a subscription to Envato Elements includes access to hundreds of design ebooks and courses. Envato Elements also grants access to hundreds of thousands of stock photos and other graphic assets that will help you to distinguish yourself on your next client project.

Social Media Scheduling: Buffer

To continuously drive leads to your freelance business, you need to stay top of mind with your audience. Creating a solid social media strategy is an essential element of inbound marketing that can take an hour or less of your time each week—with the right tools.

Buffer is a social media scheduling tool that will allow you to batch out the task of content scheduling, with tons of useful features, like the ability to add content to a publishing queue (perfect for content curation efforts) and a built-in post time optimization feature, based on data from your own social profiles. Buffer’s free plan is pretty limited, so upgrade to their Awesome plan for just $10/month.

Popular social media scheduling alternatives include Hootsuite and Sprout Social.

Conference Calls: Zoom

If you work with individuals, connecting to discuss project details is as simple as placing a call. But when you’re working with teams or companies where each employee works remotely, it’s a bit tacky (and potentially problematic) to be using your phone to merge multiple calls.

Zoom provides the perfect online/video/call-in conferencing solution. Free plans are available, but you’ll get cut off if a group call goes longer than 40 minutes. Zoom’s Pro plan costs just $14.99/month with unlimited meeting times for each call, for up to 100 participants.

Email Service Provider: MailChimp

Offering services to clients is just one way to make money in your freelance business. Once you start to make a name for yourself, you can use the power of your influence and audience to make money with passive income opportunities: online courses, affiliate marketing, and the like.

In order to make these money generating activities work, you’ll need to be building your email list from the start. It all comes together with a good email service provider (ESP). MailChimp is a great ESP for beginners, as they offer free plans up to 2000 subscribers. Unlike many other ESPs on the market, they also offer free email automation capabilities.

Other popular ESPs include ConvertKit, InfusionSoft, and AWeber.

Project Management: Basecamp

If you adopt just one app for managing client projects and contractors, let it be Basecamp. You can use Basecamp as a hub for everything relating to client projects, with features that allow for easy communication between parties and file sharing. If you work with contractors, a tool like Basecamp takes the most important information out of your head and makes it easy to document progress so that you have a larger available capacity to think creatively.

Basecamp offers a flat rate of $99/month with no limits on projects or users. Asana is another popular project management alternative that offers similar functionality with free and low priced premium plans.

Task Management: Todoist

freelance tools

If projects and business activities are made up of a lot of little tasks, you might instead organize activities using a task management tool like Todoist. Todoist operates on a slightly more bare-bones basis than the aforementioned Basecamp but is ideal for quickly assigning tasks to yourself or contractors. Deciding between Basecamp, Todoist, or a combination of these types of tools ultimately comes down to personal preference and your own ideal workflow.

Todoist is free and offers a Premium version available for just $28.99/year. Wunderlist is another popular task management alternative.

Freelance Tools Worth Paying for To Grow Your Business

As a freelancer, you have to play most, if not every role in your business—including taking on administrative tasks you never thought you’d ever have to deal with. If your business is just getting started, you can get by with free tools and by patching processes together. Eventually though, you’ll want to enable your growth by investing in tools that can help you to be more purposeful with the time you spend managing your business.
