We’ve made some awesome strides in 2018, like selling our 50 millionth item on Envato Market, having one of our ThemeForest authors hit the $25 million mark in sales, and reaching 100 thousand subscribers on Envato Elements.

Our year-end number-crunching has also revealed some interesting trends about what people are searching for or buying — data that could help inform your own work. Read on to discover the trends and surprises that have unfolded this year in Graphics, 3D, Photos, Video, Audio, Themes and Code.

Audio in 2018

Some funny surprises here, but there’s no accounting for taste.

RIP random musical trends…

Searches for niche music like ‘happy ukelele’ have more than halved in 2018 when compared to 2017. Just goes to show nothing lasts forever … unless you want to revive the trend. In which case, here you go.

Going to a Conference in April-June Next Year?
Listen Out for Our Music

For the past two years running, “conference” has seen a huge uptick in searches between April and June. So impress your boss and get ahead of the competition by choosing our most popular conference track between January and March.

Summer Is the 'Happiest' Time of the Year

So happy, in fact, that during Northern Hemisphere summer this year, “happy” was not only the number one search term, but customers searched for it over 7,000 times in just one month. How about helping yourself to some of that happiness?

2018 Is the Year of Cinematic Music

While it might have been a big year in “corporate” music for business in 2017, in 2018 it’s all been about grand musical scores that would sound terrific on a big screen. “Epic” has remained the number one search trend and we’ve seen a rapid rise in searches for “cinematic”, “documentary” and “trailer” as well. If you’re keen to bring a touch of Hollywood (or Bollywood!) to your projects, then look no further.

Mixing, Mastering, and Piano

The most popular audio tutorials on Envato Tuts+ this year were “How to Play the Piano Properly in a Rock Band” and “A Checklist for Mixing and Mastering”, an interesting juxtaposition indeed. Check them out here and here. Related: the humble piano was the most searched for instrument on AudioJungle as well!

What’s the Lifecycle of a Meme Song?

If you answered “three months”, then you win the prize. Inspired by the YouTube BabyShark Dance hit, no doubt, searches for “Baby Shark” moved from 0 in 2017 to spike sharply in the first quarter of 2018, before starting to slowly drop off during the rest of the year. It’s not the original, but here’s your own baby shark song in case you want to revive the craze.

Happy Creating in 2019!

At Envato, we know that none of these milestones or data points would be possible without the huge community of people who use our sites to buy and sell, to create and to learn. It’s humbling to be part of so many creative projects, and we can’t wait to see what you all come up with in 2019!
